Object of the project

Introduction

The present project proposes the design, implementation, and application of an electronic scoliometer system, which could be used in the initial screening of patients with suspected scoliosis and their referral for more detailed examination, using conventional diagnostic methods, when necessary.
The development of individual subsystems (Measurement Software, Decision Support System, Database Administrator, Web Application) is foreseen, which will be integrated in mobile devices.
Pilot trials will be implemented based on clinical protocol for data collection by the method of simulation as well as with real patients in the context of monitoring a broader treatment regimen.
The main goal is the fast and effective examination of patients with alternative methods, to confirm or not the existence of the disease with common mobile devices and to avoid the burden on the health of the examinees due to its exposure to radiation.

Object and goal of the project

Given the above, this project has the following objectives:
Presentation of an automated, non-invasive system for measuring the angles of inclination of the spine
The implementation of a decision support system for the risk assessment of the above measurements and their correlation with the degree of scoliosis and / or relevant quantitative measurements (e.g., Cobb angles)
The creation of appropriate software to support the above systems and their necessary graphical interfaces
The creation and support of appropriate infrastructure for the storage and transmission of data that will be produced by the above systems.
The use of common commercial devices (e.g., mobile phones, electronic tablets) for the required hardware components of the system, in order to reduce the cost of the final product, but also to make it easier for the user to get acquainted with the system.
The ultimate goal of the proposed project is the implementation of an integrated electronic system for the initial assessment of the degree of scoliosis, through a simplified examination procedure, so as to support the decision of the specialist whether or not to refer the patient to a more detailed examination.
